Academy to Screen New Director’s Cut of ‘Close Encounters’

A new director’s version of Steven Spielberg’s 1977 film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” will be screened at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills (8949 Wilshire Blvd.) on Jan. 12.

Cast and crew members will participate in a discussion following the 8 p.m. screening.

“Close Encounters” received an Oscar for cinematography (Vilmos Zsigmond) and a special achievement award from the academy for sound effects editing (Frank E. Warner).

Tickets for the screening and discussion are $5; $3 for academy members.
