If Only They’d Done the Nominating

Share

The following cheers and jeers about the Oscar nominations were expressed in a chat room of E! Entertainment Television:

brondeno: TITANIC has some of the worst dialogue ever committed to film. Anyone remember the Billy Zane character (Thurston Howell III’s evil twin) calling someone a “cad” and DiCaprio’s painful scene at the aristocrat’s dining table in which he refers to himself as a “tumbleweed”!!!! Ouch, Leonardo.

TiTenme: Although I would agree with your assertion that some of the words used in Titanic are dated, please remember that it took place in 1911 when words such as “cad” were in vogue. I wonder how our time period will fare in 87 years when historians unearth some of the currently trendy, but ridiculous words such as “dissin’ ” or “the bomb.”

georges3: Well Jack Nicholson is the “bomb.” I just couldn’t believe his romance with Helen Hunt though. I mean who “would” really believe that . . . :-)

2Berman: Hooray for The Full Monty!

brondeno: I didn’t enjoy the Full Monty too much. The accents wore me out. But I did hear the book was good. LOL

denise780: the oscars as always leave plenty true talents out. I feel DiCaprio should have been nominated for best actor.

kdcreole: I didn’t think DiCaprio’s performance was worthy of an Oscar and that neither he, nor his co-star Kate Winslet, won anything at the Golden Globe Awards program. I was surprised that Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Actress.

rialto: was surprised to see that Russell Crowe didn’t receive a nomination. Thought he was brutally scary in LA Confidential . . . but bad guys don’t usually get much glory. was gleefully surprised that Robert Forster was nominated for “Jackie Brown.” I hope he takes the statue.

denise780: I agree, rialto, but it would have been nice to see Samuel L. Jackson who is way overdue for kudos. You would think after they overlooked his best actor not supporting role in Pulp Fiction they would at least nominate him in Jackie Brown.

susaname: My bids are for Burt Reynolds for best supporting actor.

rialto: The most wonderful surprise, though was, Atom Egoyan’s nomination for “Best Director” for the best film of the year, hands down, “The Sweet Hereafter.” One of our very best and most auspiciously unique directors.

noirACE: Amistad might have successfully integrated this rich tapestry if it had been made as a 6-10 hour miniseries, instead of a 150-minute movie.

brondeno: I agree often, courtroom scenes, no matter what the movie is, bog a film down so badly that sometimes you could care less. (Granted, this was not my emotion upon watching Amistad, but I’m sure many people know what I mean.)

denise780: Any favorite movie quotes???

luvfilm: “You’re the opposite of a paranoid . . . you have the insane delusion that people like you!” ---Woody Allen to Eric Bogosian

sallyryde: Helen Hunt character to Jack Nicholson’s character: “Oh, OK. Come on in, but try not to . . . be you.”

jannie: I WAS SO THRILLED TO HEAR ROBIN WILLIAMS WAS ACKNOWLEDGED FOR HIS FINE DRAMATIC ACTING--FISHER KING, DEAD POET SOCIETY, MRS. DOUBTFIRE... WHAT DOES AN ACTOR HAVE TO DO? :-) GOOD LUCK MR. WILLIAMS.

noirACE: To win an Academy Award is the highest recognition that an actor / actress can receive from his peers. But as always we do have to remember the “Oscars” don’t define who or what is actually quality work. :-)
