A motor home carrying five Utah couples returning from a cruise careened into a median on Interstate 15, flew into the air and came crashing down Friday, killing five and injuring the others.

Some people remained trapped beneath the shattered motor home more than an hour after the 2:30 p.m. accident, the CHP said. Bodies were covered in blankets around the wreckage.

A 37-year-old man was in serious condition at San Bernardino County Medical Center with leg fractures. A woman was in critical condition with fractured ribs, internal injuries and possible head injuries, a nursing supervisor said. A 57-year-old man was in satisfactory condition.

The whereabouts of a fourth injured passenger were unclear.

A male passenger who was not seriously injured said he didn’t know what caused the accident because he was in the back at the time, the CHP said.

The cruise from which the couples were returning docked in Los Angeles on Friday morning, the passenger said.
