Ex-State Lawmaker Fatally Strikes Pedestrian With Car
A former state assemblyman struck and killed an elderly pedestrian as he crossed the Los Coyotes diagonal, authorities said Wednesday.
Dave Elder, 56, was driving south about 6:30 p.m. Monday when he hit Robert Streit, 81, of Long Beach, who crossed in the middle of the block, said Long Beach police Det. Steve Strichart.
Authorities said it was raining heavily and Streit was wearing dark clothes, making him difficult to see.
Elder, who now works for the city of Long Beach, told police he did not see Streit until he was about 20 feet away and tried to swerve to avoid him, Strichart said.
Streit was transported to St. Mary Medical Center, where he died three hours later. No charges are expected to be filed against Elder, police said.
