FOREWARD

* At Lightning, 3 p.m. Saturday: Tampa Bay GM Phil Esposito trades one problem (defenseman Roman Hamrlik) to Edmonton for two problems and a prospect. Defenseman Bryan Marchment, who knocked Dallas’ Mike Modano and Greg Adams out of action with marginal checks, has referees watching him more closely, Oiler GM Glen Sather told Fox Sports Online, which means he was on borrowed time in northern Alberta. Center Jason Bonsignore has been a major disappointment in the Oiler organization and Steve Kelly isn’t ready to play in the NHL.

OPEN

* One of the Americans to watch at the World Junior Championships in Finland, as well as the 1998 NHL draft, is 17-year-old David Legwand of the Plymouth (Mich.) Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. NHL scouts think the forward from Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., has an outside chance of beating out Vincent Lecavalier, who plays for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Rimouski Oceanic, as the No. 1 pick overall. Legwand scored 36 goals in his first 30 games.

* “I’ve told my players if they come at me, they better knock me out with the first punch because if they don’t, I’ll grab the closest thing to me and beat them to death.”--Bruins Coach Pat Burns, a former police officer, discusses the Latrell Sprewell/P.J. Carlesimo situation
