A Caribbean cruise was described by some returning passengers as “the voyage of the damned” because of problems with the air-conditioning, plumbing and drinking water.

The Norwegian Star, which sails out of Houston, has been plagued by problems on recent voyages, including a cruise late last month.

Air-conditioning on the ship has failed for long periods during four recent cruises, forcing passengers to sleep on open decks. At least 28 passengers on the latest cruise chose to fly home from the last port, Roatan Island in Honduras, on Christmas Day.

At the end of the cruise, Norwegian Cruise Line officials met the ship and handed out certificates for free seven-day trips in the Caribbean. “We built our reputation on providing a quality vacation experience, and we want to be generous,” an NCL spokeswoman said.
