Hernandez to Become Chino’s Police Chief
Police Capt. Gene Hernandez, one of the few Latino officers to reach the top ranks of law enforcement in Orange County, will leave the department after 24 years to become Chino’s chief.
Hernandez, 49, began his career with the Fullerton Police Department in 1971 and moved to Orange three years later.
Hernandez grew up in Burbank and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from San Jose State University. Over the years, he has served on a host of boards, including the YMCA and Family Solutions, a home for abused children.
His departure is bittersweet, he said, because his mentor, Chief John R. Robertson, is facing termination for allegedly investigating top city officials without proper grounds.
“Sometimes it is best to start someplace where there isn’t any history,” Hernandez added.
A public farewell luncheon will be held in his honor Thursday at 11:30 at Orange Hill Restaurant, 6410 E. Chapman Ave. For tickets, which cost $18, call Patty Van Voorst at (714) 744-7301.
