A garage fire caused more than $100,000 damage and spread to the roofs of four homes before firefighters were able to extinguish it Wednesday.

The two-alarm fire was reported about 3 p.m. in the 1700 block of Partridge Street when a woman and her two grandsons, ages 5 years and 6 months, escaped after hearing a smoke detector, Fire Capt. Tabby Cato said.

The heat ignited the shake shingle roof of the house next door and three others behind it, Cato said. Thirty firefighters had the blaze under control in 16 minutes, but only after it caused $75,000 damage to the structure and $30,000 to its contents, she said.

Firefighters, who contained most of the damage to the garage, had to rush the family’s dry Christmas tree from the living room, Cato said.

“If a spark had gotten to that, it definitely would have accelerated the fire,” she said.

Cato advised people who haven’t already done so to dispose of their Christmas trees.
