Year-Round Schedules at 5 Schools Proposed

A booming housing market might have real estate agents smiling, but school district administrators are feeling the downside.

In the Orange Unified School District, parents are being encouraged to attend upcoming meetings to help trustees decide how to cope with overcrowding.

At a meeting Thursday, Supt. Robert L. French recommended that five schools adopt year-round schedules, with “multitracks” to ensure that a portion of the student body is on vacation at any given time.

Schools affected are California, Fletcher, Handy and La Veta elementary schools, as well as Portola Middle School. The move will cost about $2.5 million, administrators said.

Trustees also will discuss reopening Vista Del Rio Middle School and eventually having it serve sixth through eighth grades.

District trustees meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Final votes on these proposals will be taken at the Feb. 26 meeting at district headquarters, 1401 N. Handy St.
