Late Pin Sinks Titan Wrestlers

Bakersfield got a pin in the final match to beat host Cal State Fullerton, 23-21, in a Pacific 10 Conference wrestling match Sunday.

The Titans’ Jonathan De Reyes got a 17-3 victory over Tito Ortiz at 190 pounds to put Fullerton ahead, 21-17. Ortiz is a former state champion from Golden West College.

But Bakersfield’s Stephen Neal, the nation’s top-ranked heavyweight, won the match by pinning Matt LaGrass in 1 minute 50 seconds.

Fullerton (3-6, 1-2) won six of the 10 matches, but Bakersfield (5-1, 3-0) had three pins and a major decision.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Idaho 71, UC Irvine 61--Visiting UC Irvine went on a 16-2 run late in the game to get as close as 65-61 with 3:03 left, but didn’t score again. Idaho made six of six free throws in the final three minutes.

Megan Stafford had 21 points and Leticia Oseguera added 16 points and 13 rebounds for UC Irvine (7-8, 2-2).

Idaho (7-10, 3-1) had a 42-31 rebounding advantage, getting 16 offensive rebounds to UC Irvine’s six. The Anteaters didn’t have an offensive rebound in the first half.

Boise State 71, Cal State Fullerton 56--Host Boise State (9-7, 3-1) scored 27 points off 28 turnovers. Fullerton is 5-10, 2-2.

In the UCLA Diving Invitational:

UC Irvine’s Earley is second--Arika Earley of UC Irvine had a score of 367.65 to finish second in the women’s one-meter event. Rose Huelskamp of UCLA won the one-meter competition with 373.55 points.
