Another Bark Park Wins Council’s OK

Every dog has its day in pooch-friendly Costa Mesa.

A proposal to add a so-called bark park where dogs can run, sniff and play freely with their own (and those who walk them) has won approval from the City Council.

The city already has a dog park near the fairgrounds. Council members Monday called on the city staff to design a 2- to 4-acre site for the second.

Officials also approved cable fencing to protect other areas in the park near vernal pools, archeological sites and equestrian access.

There is a drawback to the dog area: It would likely be near a golf course and subject to errant golf balls.

The staff suggested planting fast-growing eucalyptus to provide a shield.

Councilwoman Heather K. Somers had another solution.

“We could limit the Bark Park to retrievers,” she quipped.
