Three men died and a fourth was critically wounded during a shooting that erupted Friday afternoon in a second-story unit of a modest apartment building, police said.

Multiple gunshots were reported about 2:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found two unidentified men dead in the apartment, said Ontario Police Cpl. Michael Caldera.

Two men were lying outside. One of them, found on a walkway at the side of the building, was later pronounced dead at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland.

The other, found in the alley, was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition late Friday after surgery.

All four victims were Latino, but Caldera said police were unable to immediately establish their identity or approximate age.

As police sifted through conflicting reports from neighbors, they also were unable to establish a motive for the shooting or determine whether there had been more than one assailant. No drugs, weapons or large amounts of money were found at the scene, Caldera said.

Caldera said he was “fairly confident” that the incident was not gang-related because most of the known gang members who live on the block are in jail.

Police kept about 15 residents away from the apartment complex, which is between two churches in a working-class neighborhood.
