Childhood Paves Way for Marathon Victory

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Rob McNair usually wouldn’t bother competing in a mere 26.2-mile race, especially one that’s mapped across unforgiving asphalt. He prefers longer runs across mountain ridges and through forests, not a sunny jaunt down Pacific Coast Highway.

But McNair couldn’t pass up another chance to compete in the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, which weaved its way through the streets on which he grew up.

McNair, a 43-year-old electrician, also didn’t mind the chance to improve on his second-place finish of a year ago, which he did, winning the second annual race in 2:49.12 Sunday.

“I’m not a pavement runner. I’m a dirt runner,” McNair said. “I’ve got a 31-mile race next week. I don’t even do this, I just did it because it’s Huntington Beach, because I’ve lived here all my life.”

McNair, who finished in 2:45.57 last year, is more comfortable running distances between 50 kilometers and 100 miles. He ran the Angelus Crest 100-mile race in September, but a knee injury in that event slowed his competitive schedule. Next weekend he’ll run in a 50K race up Mt. Wilson.

McNair has set several age-group records in ultra-marathons and his personal best over 26.2 miles is 2:37.

“I’m old, I’m just trying to hang on,” McNair said. “These young guys are supposed to be killing me, especially with a bad time like this. I mean this is slow.”

McNair said he took the lead about the second mile and stayed ahead the rest of the way. With the up-and-back layout of the course, he was able to keep track of the nearest pursuer, second-place finisher Jim O’Brien (2:51.41) of Monrovia.

Some local knowledge didn’t hurt either. “I grew up downtown so I know where every rock is on this course,” he said.

The first woman to cross the finish line, and fourth overall, was also a local runner. Kelly Flathers of Huntington Beach set a women’s course record with a time of 2:55.06 in her first marathon race.

Flathers, 26, had shown her ability in shorter races, winning two local 5K runs last summer, including the Bastille Day 5K in Newport Beach.

In the half marathon, Ivo Rodrigues, 35, of Monterey Park persuaded a race official to give him a number two minutes before the start of the race and then went out and won the event in 1:08.33.

Rodrigues, who was third at the Southern California Half Marathon in Irvine two weeks ago, took the lead for good in the fifth mile.

Sarah Burns, 23, of Glendora was the first woman to finish the half marathon, running a personal-best time of 1:21.06. Burns graduated from Azusa Pacific, where she twice set the school record in the 10,000 meters last year.

David Parsel, 42, of Costa Mesa, won the 8K race in 25.30. Joan Gallagher, 33, from Long Beach, came in first among the women with a time of 30.14, followed by Carol Wimbish, 46, of Huntington Beach (32:43).

In the 5K, Anet Meyer of Tustin was the first woman, finishing in 18:29. David Jackson of Crestline was first overall with a time of 16:05.
