Service Planned for Police Gun Expert
A military memorial service has been scheduled for Tuesday to honor the range master for the Santa Ana Police Department. The weapons expert and former Marine major was killed this week in a gunfire accident.
The service for Joe Samuel Boyd, the 54-year-old civilian gun trainer who was shot in the head Wednesday, begins at 1 p.m. in the chapel at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, according to Santa Ana Police Lt. Robert Helton.
The Lake Forest resident was killed while handling a jammed MAC-10 9mm assault gun in the presence of two Santa Ana police detectives, officials said. The outlawed gun, connected to an investigation, was brought to the department’s range for test firing.
The Santa Ana Police Officers Assn. has set up a Joe Boyd Memorial Fund. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank, 141 W. Bastanchury Road, Fullerton, CA 92835. For more information on the fund, call (714) 836-1211.
