Hawley Finishes Storied Career in Third Place

Share

Unlike fellow Canadian John Longden, Sandy Hawley didn’t have a successful ending to his riding career.

While Longden went out a winner with George Royal in the last ride of his career in the 1966 San Juan Capistrano, Hawley had to settle for third aboard 3-5 favorite Terremoto in the $125,000-added Dominion Day Handicap on Wednesday at Woodbine.

Breaking from the inside in the field of nine, Hawley was in traffic most of the way, and by the time he was able to get to the outside at the head of the stretch, it was much too late. Stephanotis, a 4-1 shot, won the race and Northern Sky was second.

Hawley, 49, finished his career with 6,449 victories, leaving him eighth on the all-time list.

After the race, he was joined by wife Lisa and sons Bradley, 6 and Russell, 4, and honored in a ceremony on Woodbine’s E.P. Taylor turf course.
