Raytheon Will Lay Off More Than 600 in the County

More than 600 employees at Raytheon Systems Co. facilities in Irvine and Newport Beach will be laid off over the next year as the defense electronics unit of Raytheon Co. continues a two-year consolidation plan, a spokesman said Thursday. The first Orange County facility to be hit will be Raytheon’s Irvine parts depot, which closes its doors at the end of the month.

About 100 of 165 employees there will be laid off, said company spokesman Jim Knotts, and the others will be transferred to other Raytheon units. In addition, the first 50 of more than 500 employees to be laid off in the closing of the Raytheon microelectronics division in Newport Beach got their notices earlier this week, Knotts said. Raytheon will be phasing out that plant and another facility in Torrance over the next 12 months, laying off about 730 workers and transferring 150 others.

The Newport Beach facility now has 630 employees.
