Flathers Leads Parade to 5K Finish Line

Kelly Flathers won the women’s open division of the Huntington Beach Parade 5K race for the second consecutive year Saturday.

Flathers of Huntington Beach, won in 17 minutes 8 seconds. Flathers, 27, won last year in 17:21.

Trini Robles, 35, of Placentia was second in 17:34 and Erin Remy, 32, of Fullerton was third in 18:13. Remy ran cross-country and track at Orange Coast and Cal State Fullerton.

Oliver Wild of Irvine won the men’s open 5K in 15:13. Dan Stefanisko, 35, of Chino Hills was second in 15:22 and Josh Spiker, 16, of Ventura was third in 15:24.

Rod Millen of Newport Beach, the defending Unlimited Class champion and overall record-holder, was the fastest driver in Saturday’s 76th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Millen, 46, raced a hybrid Toyota Tacoma up the 12.42-mile gravel road to the 14,110-foot summit in 10 minutes 7.70 seconds, just shy of his record run of 10:04.06 in 1974.

David Chapman of Long Beach beat defending champion Octavio Silveyra of Commerce, 21-20, 21-9, 11-8, in the final of the men’s pro singles Saturday at the U.S. Handball Assn. National Championships at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

Silveyra was seeded first and Chapman was No. 2.

Top-seeded Lisa Fraser of Winnipeg won the women’s pro singles title by beating Yvonne August of Castro Valley, 21-8, 21-9.

John Heath Ball, Peter Townend, Chuck Dent, Frieda Zamba and Jack O’Neill have been elected to the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame. In addition, WOF officials will honor Natalie Kotsch and Ann Beasley, founders of the International Surfing Museum of Huntington Beach.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. July 30 in front of Jack’s Surfboards, located on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street.

Liz Mizera of Huntington Beach was selected to play in the Women’s Pro Fastpitch All-Star game July 14 in Akron, Ohio. Mizera, a shortstop who attended Texas A & M, will play for the WPF Stars squad against the WPF Stripes squad. She is one of five Californians selected for the game. It is the league’s first all-star game.
