Proctor Delivers 3s for Crescenta Valley

If you look up the term “three-pointer” in the dictionary, you won’t find the Crescenta Valley High team picture.

But you’ll see the Falcons all over the Southern Section girls’ basketball record book.

In 1993, Sarah Hagman set a section record for three-pointers in a game. Two years later, Amirah Leonard set the section mark for three-point baskets in a season.

This season, Crescenta Valley has a pair of outside threats in senior Danielle Proctor and junior Kristie Umemoto.

Proctor made four three-point baskets during the Falcons’ 36-32 victory over Canyon in the championship game of the Santa Clarita Shootout on Saturday night at College of the Canyons.

It was Crescenta Valley’s third consecutive Shootout title.

“Our offense is not geared for the three,” Coach Damian Scribner said. “But we’re going to take what defenses give us.”

The score was tied, 15-15, at halftime.

Proctor’s three-point basket early in the second half gave the Falcons a 22-19 lead. The next time down the floor, she made another for a 25-21 lead.

“I felt it in warmups,” said Proctor, whose three-pointers accounted for all of her 12 points. “I told [a teammate] if she saw me open to get me the ball. I just felt it.”

By the time Proctor hit her fourth shot, Canyon was in a 34-25 hole with 4:10 to play.

“Those just killed us,” Canyon Coach Paul Broneer said.

Lar Chouljian and Umemoto, the Shootout’s most valuable player, each scored eight points. Umemoto had two three-point shots. Kelly Paige had 11 rebounds.

Latricia Fleming scored 11 points and Janette Garcia had seven for the Cowboys.

The loss ended an 11-game winning streak for Canyon, which was making its first appearance in the Shootout final since 1993.

Royal 37, Notre Dame 36--Kellie Gesell’s eight-footer in the lane with 18 seconds left was the difference for Royal in the third-place game. Gesell had 13 points.

Sierra Hauser-Price had 10 points for Notre Dame, which had taken a 36-35 lead when LaToya Washington made a three-point basket with 26 seconds left.

Hart 36, Highland 26--This fifth-place game was tied, 26-26, with 4:46 left before the Indians scored the final 10 points.

Saugus 40, Valencia 27--Ornella Grosz had 20 points for Saugus, which defeated its Foothill League rival in the consolation championship. Tiffany Morgan scored 11 points for Valencia.

Burbank 40, Santa Paula 31--Natalie Avanecy scored 12 points and Carolyn Ovsepyan added 11 for Burbank. Sarah Kolback of Santa Paula scored 17 points.
