The National League West’s top team met the major leagues’ hottest team Friday night, and it was no contest.

The San Diego Padres hit a club-record six homers, accounting for 12 runs, and brought the Cincinnati Reds’ 10-game winning streak to an abrupt halt with a 13-3 victory.

Greg Vaughn hit a homer into each of the top two decks of Cinergy Field, Tony Gwynn also homered twice and Ruben Rivera had his first grand slam as the Padres made quick work of Cincinnati’s best winning streak since 1975.

“Before the game, we talked about how you can’t look past anyone,” Vaughn said. “We came out with intensity because that’s a good team over there.”

It was a thoroughly beaten team by the ninth, when Steve Finley homered to complete an impressive offensive showing. Every Padres’ starter had at least one hit. In all, they had 15, 10 for extra bases.

“They made sure they touched up everybody,” Cincinnati Manager Jack McKeon said. “We’ve battled hard for 15 or 16 days and it took its toll. That’s showed tonight. Truthfully, we’re exhausted.”

Andy Ashby (13-5) gave up three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings and pulled even with Atlanta’s Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine for most wins in the National League. The right-hander has beaten Cincinnati three times this season after starting his career 0-8 against the Reds.
