A minor earthquake rattled Newport Beach residents early Monday.

The new temblor--not an aftershock--struck at 5:31 a.m. with a 2.5 magnitude, said Jim Mori, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena.

The earthquake occurred three miles east-northeast of Newport Beach, authorities said.

“I felt it. It woke me up,” said City Council member Janice A. Debay.

Jean H. Watt, a former Newport Beach council member, was also awakened. “It was just quick,” she said, a short jolt.

The quake was so light that the Newport Beach Police Department reported that not one person called to inquire about it.
