Two Oxnard men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Felipe Contreras Diaz, 23, and Johnny Chalo Contreras, 19, were taken into custody Tuesday morning, Oxnard police said.

Police said the two allegedly tried to rob Daniel Gonzales in the parking lot of a liquor store on the 100 block of East Channel Islands Boulevard about 12:10 a.m. and then allegedly tried to run him over with a car as he fled. Gonzales was not injured.

Less than an hour later, the suspects allegedly tried to rob Alfred Salinas with a crowbar at the 900 block of North Ventura Road.

Later in the morning, an Oxnard police officer saw a 1985 Nissan Maxima sedan that matched the victims’ description and arrested Diaz and Contreras, who admitted that they were gang members, authorities said. Police found a crowbar in the car.

Both men were being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Ventura County Jail.
