JAMIE CAIL, 200 IM, 500 freestyle, Marina, Jr.

Cail defeated Olympian Amanda Beard of Irvine to win the 200 IM (2:02.63) at Southern Section Division I finals. She then came back to win the 500 free in 4:44.69, which is the nation’s fastest prep time.

JESSICA HAYES, 200 freestyle, University, Fr.

Don’t be fooled by Hayes’ freshman status. She is among the nation’s best prep freestylers. Her Division II-winning time of 1:49.92 was almost three seconds faster than the county’s second-best time.

SARAH JONES, 50 freestyle, San Clemente, Fr.

Jones’ 50 free times remained among the top three all season long. She became the only swimmer from Orange County to break the 24-second barrier when she clocked a 23.98 to win at the section Division I finals.

LINDSEY BUCK, 100 butterfly, Laguna Hills, Fr.

Buck is a butterfly specialist and was not about to let anyone beat her in the event at Division II finals. Exploding off the blocks, she quickly took the lead and held it to finish the race in an All-American time of 56.88.

STEPHANIE HSIAO, 100 freestyle, Irvine, Fr.

Hsiao came back after a disappointing preliminary swim to win the event at Division I finals. Her winning time of 51.38 was a second faster than her prelim time and the season’s fastest time in the county.

KYOKO YOKOUCHI, 100 backstroke, Marina, So.

Yokouchi may have been in Cail’s shadow, but she was still a big part of Marina’s success. A crucial member of the Vikings’ relay teams, her 56.96 in the backstroke won the event at the section finals.

AMANDA BEARD, 100 breaststroke. Irvine, Jr.

Although Olympian Beard isn’t swimming as fast as she did her freshman year, she still has the spark. She won at the section Division I finals in 1:02.80, which was the section’s fastest time this year.

SUSAN LORD, Coach, Laguna Hills

Lord proved that screaming and yelling doesn’t have to be the mark of a good coach. Her low-keyed approach helped the Hawks win three consecutive section titles and a sixth Pacific Coast League title.

KRISTEN MARQUIS, Diving, Santa Margarita, Jr.

After starting out slow, Marquis came on strong and finished her routine with two high scoring drives to hold off Michelle Brown of Dana Hills. Marquis won the section Division I title with 555.60 points.
