Calvary Chapel Bids to Keep Lock on Title

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel and Hector Torres of Rosemead High will attempt to defend titles Saturday in the state wrestling championships at University of Pacific in Stockton.

A total of 112 wrestlers from the Southern Section qualified for the state championships by finishing in the top eight in 14 weight classes at last week’s Masters meet at Fountain Valley High.

Fourteen wrestlers from City Section schools qualified by winning or placing second at last week’s City championship meet at San Fernando High.

Calvary Chapel, the two-time defending state champion, is going for its fifth state title in six years, with seven of its wrestlers qualifying.

The Eagles qualified seven wrestlers for Saturday’s tournament, including 112-pound Masters champion champion Adam Bones and Mike Bigrigg (189 pounds).

Torres, a senior, won the heavyweight title last year and won the Masters championship en route to Saturday’s state meet.

Other Masters meet and City Section meet champions among Saturday’s competitors are:

135: Dustin Clocherty (Ventura); Eddie Moro (San Fernando).

140: Pat Calwallader (Brethren Christian); Raymon Munoz (Canoga Park).

145: Ryan Kane (Temecula Valley); Art Lucero (El Camino Real).

152: Jason Palmer (Moreno Valley Rancho Verde); Keith Thomas (El Camino Real).

160: Jason Anderson St. John Bosco); Eugene Korchmarev (El Camino Real).

171: Dan Martinez (Morro Bay); Anthony Thomas (El Camino Real).

189: Frankie Valdez (Chatsworth).
