Pierce’s Zito Throws One-Hitter at Glendale

Barry Zito pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14 batters for Pierce College in a 1-0 victory over Glendale on Thursday in a Western State Conference baseball game at Pierce.

Pierce (6-7 overall, 2-2 in conference play) scored in the second inning.

Zito (3-0) gave up a single to first baseman Mike Bench to right-center field with one out in the fifth inning.

“He had real good command of his pitches,” Pierce Coach Bob Lofrano said. “He was pretty dominant today and only allowed three baserunners.”

The other baserunners reached on a walk and on a error by second baseman Brian Menkin.

Zito retired the last 13 batters, six by strikeout, and threw 119 pitches.

Nevada Las Vegas 11, CS Northridge 2--Chris MacMillian and Marco Estrada each had two hits but the Matadors (11-14) were limited to six by two pitchers in a first-round game at the Las Vegas tournament.

Starter Joe Vasquez (1-2) allowed 11 runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings for Northridge (11-14).

Oxnard 6, Ventura 3--Kevin Mellinger had three hits and the Condors (10-4, 3-1) rallied from a 2-1 sixth-inning deficit to win a WSC North Division game at Ventura.

SOFTBALL

Pierce 12, Santa Barbara 0--Marsha Gonzales (1-0) pitched a three-hitter over five innings for the Brahmas in a WSC game that was called because of the 10-run rule at Pierce.

Charlotte Ali had a run-scoring single and a two-run double during a 12-run fourth inning.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 6, Texas Christian 1--Robert Lindstedt, playing at No. 2 singles and at No. 1 doubles with Kelly Gullett, accounted for two points for the Waves (2-2) in a victory at Texas Christian (2-2).
