A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized in good condition Sunday after being shot in the right shoulder, apparently while he and a friend played with a gun, police said.

The youth was transported at 3:32 p.m. by air ambulance to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, according to Jim Wells, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

“The bullet went right in and right out,” hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge said.

Surgery may not be necessary, Rutledge said.

Wells said the incident occurred in front of an apartment complex at 7035 N. Woodley Ave. According to police, the boy and an older teenage friend were playing with the gun when it fired.
