All-Star Soccer Contests Had Their Share of Highs, Lows

There were highlights and lowlights for players from the region competing on the West teams in the High School Senior All-Star games Sunday at Royal High.

On the upside, the West boys’ team defeated the East, 1-0, when Royal’s Dan Wilson headed in a cross from Agoura’s Ron Zavlodaver with three minutes to play. Buena’s Mike Bradbury was named the most valuable player.

The West girls’ team was edged by the North, 2-1, but Westlake’s Megan Daly scored the West’s goal.

On the downside, West boys’ sweeper Kelly O’Brien of Thousand Oaks broke his arm and Palmdale’s Kim Britton arrived at the field after the game because organizers switched the team’s game time less than two days before the event.

The game’s program misspelled 11 of the 17 names on the girls’ West roster. Goalkeeper Kim Nelli of Chaminade was identified as Tim Nelli of Chatsworth.

BASKETBALL

Nothing doing: Larry Mohr, Canyon High’s football coach, attended the Southern Section Division I-AA girls’ basketball final between Long Beach Wilson and Peninsula on Saturday.

Mohr’s sister, Margaret, is Long Beach Wilson’s coach and represented the Mohr family’s last chance to defeat Peninsula this school year.

“I was kind of hoping she’d pay them back for me,” said Larry Mohr, whose team was eliminated from the 1997 football playoffs by Peninsula, 52-25.

The Mohr family dropped to 0-2 against the Panthers after Peninsula won the basketball game, 55-40.
