REDLANDS SWIMMING

* County connections: Tara Severe (Pacifica).

* Worth noting: Severe, who at the 1997 Southern Section Division III finals finished fourth in the girls’ 200 freestyle and sixth in the 100 free, competed in the NCAA Division III championships in St. Louis. A freshman, she finished 18th in the 200 free (1 minute 57.45 seconds), 23rd in the 100 free (54.17) and 27th in the 50 free (25.22). She also swam legs on the 800 free relay team, which finished sixth in 7:53.99 and earned All-American honors, and the 200 and 400 free relay teams, which earned honorable mention All-American honors. Redlands finished 15th in the meet.

ARIZONA SOFTBALL

* County connections: Lauren Bauer (Foothill), Leah Braatz (Estancia), Michelle Churnock (Foothill), Lindsey Collins (Fountain Valley), Alison Johnsen (Woodbridge), Toni Mascarenas (Pacifica).

* Worth noting: Making up more than one-third of the Wildcats’ roster, these women helped No. 1 ranked Arizona (32-2) beat 11th-ranked Texas, 2-1, Sunday to win the championship of the Kia Klassic at Cal State Fullerton. The second run of the second inning of the title game was strictly a county production. Collins singled, went to second on a forceout, reached third on a single by Bauer and scored on a double by center fielder Johnsen, the only senior among the six.
