Chapman’s Blitstein Shuts Out Eastern Connecticut

Jeff Blitstein pitched a five-hitter and gave up one walk as host Chapman defeated Eastern Connecticut, 2-0, in baseball Thursday.

Blitstein (7-1) has given up only one run in his last 43 innings.

Iggy Galaz and Josh Fallon drove in runs in the fifth inning for the Panthers (16-6).

The Panthers, who are ranked 13th in NCAA Division III, have won eight of their last nine games. Eastern Connecticut is ranked 16th.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Point Loma Nazarene 3, Southern California College 2--Ryan McCloskey and Marques Esquerra had first inning RBIs for Point Loma Nazarene (16-16, 6-8). Dustin Love and Erik Erwin combined on a seven-hitter for Point Loma.

Bryce Primm gave up five hits in a complete game for Southern California College (17-14, 10-9).

In the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate golf tournament:

UC Irvine ties for fourth--The Anteaters shot 309 Thursday at Sandpiper and finished tied for fourth with Cal State San Bernardino. Mike Lawrence shot par 72 and 75 for UC Irvine, finishing tied for sixth with seven other golfers.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 3-3, Bethany (Kan.) 0-2--Jen Houston pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first game of a sweep for Southern California College. Valerie Irwin and Alicia Groshon each had an RBI single for host SCC (26-6).

In the second game, Christina Blankenship scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Chrissy Vega’s two out single.

Gretchen Brandt pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and improved to 11-3.

In the Sheraton Newport Beach men’s tennis tournament:

UC Irvine advances--UCI defeated Sacramento State, 4-1, in a first-round match at the Racquet Club of Irvine. David Chang and Nick Varvais extended their season record to 9-0 with a victory in doubles for the Anteaters, who play Northeast Louisiana in today’s second round.
