The driver of a semitrailer truck died early Friday when the vehicle veered off Lancaster Road and smashed several utility poles before rolling over, authorities said.

The driver, a 48-year-old Stockton man, was pinned beneath the cab and pronounced dead at the scene, California Highway Patrol Officer Wendy Moore said.

The man’s identity was being withheld until relatives were notified, Moore said.

At 12:30 a.m. the driver was traveling west on Lancaster Road, about two miles east of the Golden State Freeway, when he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the 18-wheeler, Moore said.

The truck was carrying a full load of instant mashed potatoes and cake mix, which did not spill onto the roadway, Moore said.
