SEPARATING CHURCH AND STATE: Activist Tom Conry, a public schoolteacher, will discuss his crusade against religious extremism in “Vista’s Public Schools--Back from the Brink,” a talk sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Americans United for Separation of Church and State at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Northridge United Methodist Church, 9650 Reseda Blvd. As president of the Vista Teachers Assn., Conry battled against an extremist school board that had introduced measures that imposed its religious views on the area’s public schools in 1992. By 1994, Conry’s work organizing teachers and the community resulted in a recall of board members, and the election of a board that supported public education without religious interference.
