Train Kills Pedestrian in Buena Park

An unidentified pedestrian was killed by a passenger train Sunday morning after he failed to heed--or did not hear--the train’s horn, authorities said.

The man had been walking on tracks at Dale Avenue, south of Malvern Avenue, Police Sgt. Ken Coovert said.

The engineer sounded the train’s horn for about a minute, but the man “didn’t respond and the engineer was not able to stop the train,” Coovert said. The pedestrian was killed instantly, he said.

The Amtrak train, which was headed to Los Angeles from Barstow, was traveling about 70 mph, Coovert said.

The pedestrian “never looked back and did not acknowledge in any way that he heard the horn or knew the train was approaching,” Coovert said.

The train was halted for 90 minutes while Orange County coroner’s officials recovered his body.

Coovert said coroner’s officials still are trying to identify the pedestrian.
