Rosary Pitcher Ledford Signs With Chapman

Christy Ledford, a pitcher at Rosary, signed a letter of intent to play softball next year at Chapman, Rosary Coach Tom Tice said.

Ledford is 11-5 with a 0.51 earned-run average. Last year, she was 15-8 with a 0.74 ERA and was a second-team All-Golden West League player.

Ledford is the second Royals’ player to commit to Chapman. Theresa Cronin, a right fielder who has also played first and third base, will also play for the Panthers.

Three Ocean View baseball players announced their college choices last week, Seahawk Coach Steve Barrett said.

Shortstop Andy Wirmani, batting .390 with four home runs, and first baseman Jason Martini (.460, seven homers) signed letters of intent with Cal State Los Angeles.

Third baseman Jason Miller (.400, three homers) will play for Chapman.

Jeff Johnston, UC Irvine golf coach, has been appointed director of golf and will be the intramural sports director, school officials announced.

Johnston, who has been the golf coach the last three seasons, will oversee the program, including fund-raising, alumni relations and managing Irvine’s home tournaments. He will also run the university’s intramural programs. He was the assistant director of campus recreation from 1988-94.

The Anteaters will play in the NCAA West Regional May 14-16 in Tempe, Ariz.
