Orange County Teams Get Top Seedings in Volleyball

Two teams from the Sea View League got No. 1 seedings and the other got a No. 3 seeding in the Southern Section boys’ volleyball pairings announced Monday.

Sea View champion Newport Harbor (17-0) is seeded No. 1 in Division I and second-place Santa Margarita (14-3), which won the Division II title last season, is seeded third. Laguna Beach (14-2), the Pacific Coast League champion, is seeded second and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa is seeded fourth.

Although Corona del Mar (9-5) lost twice to both Newport Harbor and Santa Margarita, the Sea Kings are seeded No. 1 in Division III. Corona del Mar lost in the Division III final last season.

The Sea View League’s fourth-place team, El Toro (8-8), did not receive an at-large bid in Division I although the Chargers finished No. 8 in the county.

Defending Division I champion Esperanza (8-9) also did not receive an at-large bid. No at-large bids were awarded in Division I.

In Division II, South Coast League co-champion Mater Dei (14-1) is seeded third and received a first-round bye. Mater Dei could meet second-seeded Santa Barbara (18-7) in the semifinals. Santa Barbara San Marcos (15-3) is seeded No. 1 in Division II.

Wild-card matches begin Wednesday and the first round is Friday. The finals are May 30 at Cypress College.

Garden Grove, which won the Southern Section Division I badminton title in 1995, is seeded second for the Division I playoffs, which begin with wild-card matches Wednesday. First-round matches are May 19.

Fullerton, which won its first league title this season, is seeded fourth in Division I and could meet top-seeded Alhambra Keppel in the semifinals.

Empire League co-campions Loara and Century earned seedings in Division II. Loara is seeded second and Century is seeded fourth. Long Beach Wilson is the No. 1 seed in Division II.

The finals are May 28 at the Orange County Badminton Club.
