A driver rammed a utility pole with a truck near Live Oak Canyon and Santiago roads late Wednesday, leaving the 1996 Ford truck at the scene and calling police the next morning to help him find the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The motorist, 38-year-old Jim Johnson of Covina, was driving with a male passenger on Live Oak Canyon Road when he hit a wooden pole about 1 a.m., said Officer Joan Rivas of the San Juan Capistrano CHP office.

Parts of the road were closed until noon Thursday while repairmen inspected the damage.

Johnson called the CHP at 7 a.m Thursday, Rivas said. “He said he fell asleep and was just wondering on the whereabouts of the truck,” Rivas said. The officer said it was unclear how the man got home. He and his passenger were uninjured.
