Bryce Schurr

Re “Granada Hills High to Proceed With Stadium Renaming,” April 24.

That the stadium at Granada Hills High school is to be renamed John Elway Stadium, removing the name of Bryce Schurr, is a most disrespectful act. While acknowledging the immense talent of this outstanding football player and notoriety brought to this fine high school, I am saddened by the removal of the name of the first principal. Schurr’s ardent goal to build a stadium that would serve the community was not an easy task. His perseverance won out. Many will remember his decisiveness after examining all parts of an issue and making a rule. It was: “No Dice Bryce.” He was a former mayor of San Fernando and former track star. His full dedication to the community was attested to when the 1971 earthquake shattered the area. It was his quick coordination with the Red Cross that opened the school to those without shelter or food. Three of my grown children were graduated from Granada Hills High. We all hoped that this one tribute would have remained.
