SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A Thousand Oaks woman and a Woodland Hills man were in custody Sunday on suspicion of robbing Stagecoach Liquors in Newbury Park.

The robbery occurred Friday about 4:30 p.m. when David Keppler, 31, entered the store at 1536 Newbury Road wearing a baseball cap and a bandage that covered most of his face, according to Det. Ernie Montagna with the East County Sheriff’s Station in Thousand Oaks.

Witnesses said Kristina Palmer, 28, waited in a vehicle outside the store during the robbery, Montagna said.

Police believe Keppler shot one round, hitting a counter, then pointed the gun at a clerk and demanded cash. After getting the money, the gunman fled the store and jumped into the waiting car, Montagna said.

Witnesses provided a license-plate number of the getaway vehicle, which eventually lead police to the suspects. They were staying at the Woodland Hills Motor Lodge in Woodland Hills and were arrested Saturday evening.

After the arrest, police discovered Keppler had a gunshot wound to his leg. Police believe he accidentally shot himself while robbing the store.

Keppler was treated at Ventura County Medical Center before being booked into Ventura County Men’s Jail. Palmer was taken to the Main Jail in Ventura. Both remain in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail.
