Hill Is Second Team All-American Choice

Second baseman Nakia Hill of Cal State Northridge was selected to the All-American second team by Baseball Weekly magazine.

Hill, a junior transfer from Cal State Fullerton, batted .414 with 15 home runs and 41 runs batted in.

Benny Flores, a left-handed pitcher for Cal State Fullerton who transferred from Northridge last summer, also was a second-team choice.

Second best: Senior second baseman Joe Jauregui of Cal Lutheran was chosen to the NCAA Division III All-West Region team by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

Junior outfielder Donny Churchman of Cal Lutheran was selected to the second team.

Jauregui batted .378 and drove in 33 runs.

Churchman batted .413 and drove in 32 runs.

Making pitch: Pitcher Josh Herman of Crescenta Valley has committed to Azusa Pacific.

Herman has a 16-3 record the last two seasons in helping the Falcons win consecutive Pacific League championships.

Crescenta Valley faces Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Friday at Stengel Field in a first-round Division I playoff game.

BOXING

Homecoming: Junior-middleweight Fernando Vargas of Oxnard, undefeated in 12 professional bouts, will fight in the Los Angeles area Aug. 22 at a site to be determined.

The fight originally was scheduled for July 14.

Vargas, 20, a former U.S. Olympian who signed a lucrative promotional contract with Main Events in 1996, has not fought in Southern California since making his professional debut in March 1997 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.

Vargas is scheduled to fight Anthony Stephens, 29-8-2 with 17 knockouts, June 23 in Philadelphia.

Faculty meeting: St. Genevieve High in Panorama City is hosting basketball games involving faculty from Crespi, Notre Dame, Alemany, Bell-Jeff, Chaminade and St. Genevieve.

Pool play: Midfielder Erin Misaki of Hart High has been selected to the U.S. under-18 national pool.

Committed: Midfielder Eric Hass of Chaminade has committed to play at Claremont-McKenna next season.

VOLLEYBALL

Shareholders: Opposite hitter Joe Nargi of Taft High and middle blocker Jeff Toon of Kennedy, both bound for Cal State Northridge, were selected co-players of the year in the Northwest Valley Conference .

Outside hitter Hugo Cabadas of Monroe was selected player of the year in the Mid-Valley League.

TENNIS

Passing grade: Chris Yoo of Granada Hills High, seeded third in the City Section Boys’ individual championships, advanced to the round of eight with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over David Reyes of University on Wednesday at MountainGate Country Club.

The match had been rescheduled from Tuesday so Yoo could take advanced placement tests.

Yoo will face Frank Vlahovic of Verdugo Hill in a quarterfinal match.
