Velazquez Unstoppable in Marina Victory

Marina catcher Alicia Velazquez had three hits and threw out five runners trying to steal to lead the Vikings to a 3-2, nine-inning victory over Dana Hills in a Division II first-round softball game at Marina.

The Vikings (23-5) scored the game-winning run when Dana Hills attempted to pick off Brooke Blair at third but the ball caromed off the runner, which enabled her to score. The Vikings play Aliso Niguel in the second round Tuesday.

In other Division II games:

Aliso Niguel 1, Canyon 0--Sara Sheikh tripled with no outs in the fourth inning to drive in Jill Freed for Aliso Niguel (11-11).

El Dorado 4, San Clemente 0--Melissa Hobson (8-3) threw a one-hitter, striking out four and walking one, for El Dorado (15-9).

Woodbridge 11, University 0--Christy Robitaille threw six innings to earn her 84th career victory, which surpassed the county record set by Kennedy’s Cheryl Longeway from 1988-91.

In Division III softball:

La Habra 3, Rosemead 0--Christina Gibbons struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete game for host La Habra (21-7-1).

In Division V softball:

Whittier Christian 2, Long Beach St. Anthony 1--Bobbi Goodman’s double in the fourth with two outs drove in Jodi Alessi with the game-winner for host Whittier Christian (12-13).

In Division I badminton:

Garden Grove 13, Alhambra 6--Junior Cynthia Tran lost for only the second time this season to Alhambra’s Stella Ng, 11-7, 11-7, 7-11. Garden Grove is 17-0.

In Division II badminton:

Century 15, Alta Loma 4--Samuer Por and Chheng Seap won in girls’ doubles, 18-17, 17-18, 18-17, and, 18-17, 16-18, 18-17, as Century (17-1) advanced.

Loara 14, Colton 5--Loara (15-3) swept in girls’ doubles. In singles, Sophea Kiet won, 15-9, 15-3, and, 15-7, 15-1.
