Hart Allows Villa Park to Take Game Away, 9-7

Hart High gave up three runs in the top of the seventh inning and was upset by Villa Park, 9-7, Friday in a first-round game of the Southern Section Division II baseball playoffs.

Travis Richardson had three hits and two runs batted in for Hart (24-4), ranked No. 1 by The Times in the region and seeded No. 2 in the division.

Chris Wright and Jeff Gaeta each had two hits for Hart and Wright had three RBIs.

Gaeta’s double was the only extra-base hit for the Indians, who committed six errors.

Hart’s Andy Davidson (10-2) allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out seven in five innings.

Villa Park improved to 14-14.

In another Division II first-round game:

Hueneme 5, San Gabriel 4--Chris Neri’s two-run homer in the seventh inning lifted the Vikings at San Gabriel.

Neri (6-2) pitched an eight-hitter with seven strikeouts. He had three hits.

Robbie Rendon singled to lead off the seventh for Hueneme (17-10). Neri followed with a blast to center field.

Robert Avila and Francisco Camarena each had two hits for Hueneme. Avila had a home run in the sixth inning, his sixth.

DIVISION I

Palmdale 4, Camarillo 3--Jason Gorman hit the game-winning home run and pitched five-plus innings for Palmdale to earn the victory, but the Falcons could not have defeated Camarillo at Palmdale without Mark Hendricks.

Hendricks earned his first save in relief of Gorman (8-0) by retiring six of the seven batters he faced after entering the game with runners on first and second and nobody out in the sixth inning.

He answered Joe Yingling’s two-run, first-inning home run for the Scorpions (19-8)--ranked No. 9 by The Timesin the region--with a three-run blast in the bottom of the inning that tied the score, 3-3.

Gorman allowed two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Right fielder Alex Suarez helped the No. 7-ranked Falcons (20-5) when he threw out Garrett Valencia trying to score on a flyout by Justin Collins, ending the fifth inning.

Yingling (3-3) gave up nine hits, struck out five and walked two.

Palmdale will play Crespi in the second round.

Royal 8, Arcadia 7--Tony Ortega had three hits and four RBIs for host Royal (18-7).

Ortega hit a 3-2 pitch to center field for a three-run home run to cap a five-run second inning that put Royal ahead, 5-3.

Tyrone Kimbrough had a double and triple for Royal. His second-inning double scored Jason Bowers to cut Arcadia’s lead to 3-1.

Brian Lipman had two hits and an RBI for Royal.

DIVISION III

Westlake 5, Paso Robles 4--Mike Brin’s eighth-inning, bases-loaded single drove home Brian Bladen with the winning run at Westlake.

Westlake (16-10) took a 4-1 lead into the seventh before Paso Robles (12-9) scored three runs off Jeff Boyle, who allowed only two hits through six innings.

Ethan East (3-1) entered the game in the eighth and struck out two of three batters.

Doug Hutton had two hits and drove in two runs, and Kevin Howard had two hits and drove in one run for Westlake.

South Torrance 7, Calabasas 2--The Coyotes gave up six runs in the first two innings at South Torrance.

Calabasas (12-13) scored in the sixth inning when South Torrance’s center fielder overran a single by Austin Richter, allowing Zach Sloan and Marc Wilson to score.

Brian Millman had two hits, including a double, for the Coyotes.

Moorpark 3, Torrance 2--Justin Tolliver singled to right field with the outfield playing in with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Matt Norris with the winning run.

Taylor Slimak had two hits for Moorpark (19-7).

Brian Gilbert (7-2) pitched a three-hitter for the Musketeers. He walked six but was aided by two double plays.

Burroughs 13, Sierra Vista 9--Jeremy Cartee’s sixth-inning grand slam gave Burroughs a 10-6 lead at Sierra Vista.

Cartee drove in five runs, adding a run-scoring single in the seventh inning. Spencer Steward drove in four runs for Burroughs (15-12). Steward had a three-run double to highlight a five-run first inning and a run-scoring double in the sixth.

Robert Barillas and Mike Shamoon had doubles for Burroughs. Nick Jastrow (8-2) allowed eight runs in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three.

John Moreno had two hits and scored four runs for Burroughs.

DIVISION IV

Lompoc 9, Oak Park 2--Cory Boldroff drove in two runs with a seventh-inning double for Oak Park at Lompoc.

Boldroff finished with two doubles. Jeff Roberts had a single and scored a run for the Eagles (14-9).

Roberts gave up four hits in five innings but walked seven batters. Oak Park committed five errors.

St. Francis 3, Paraclete 2--Gabby Velazquez drove in two runs, including the game-winner with a double in the sixth inning at Paraclete.

Andy Lopez had a run-scoring triple in the first inning for St. Francis (15-8-1).

Ariel Bellofiore (7-1) struck out four in 6 1/3 innings. Fernando Valenzuela picked off the potential tying run at first base in the seventh and recorded his third save.

St. Joseph 8, Chaminade 5--Ryan Soroka had a run-scoring double and a run-scoring single during a comeback effort by Chaminade (14-14) that fell short when Brian Kirby struck out with runners on first and third to end the game at St. Joseph.

Soroka’s two-out single in the seventh inning scored Brian Palmer, and he doubled to score Jon Higashi and spark a two-out, three-run rally in the sixth inning.

Spencer Gordon drove in Soroka with a triple and scored on a throwing error on the play.

Chaminade trailed, 7-1, after five innings. Brian Dodos hit a three-run double during a five-run first inning for St. Joseph (18-3).

DIVISION V

L.A. Baptist 10, Flintridge Prep 0--Senior right-hander Tim Feirfeil (9-2) struck out nine, and had two hits and two RBIs in a game at L.A. Baptist called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Raul Pacheco and Scott Swenson each drove in two runs for L.A. Baptist (18-5).

Viewpoint 10, Boron 3--Artin Sedighan had a three-run triple to highlight a nine-run first inning for host Viewpoint.

Sedighan also had a run-scoring single in the fifth. Patrick Sheffield had three hits, including a two-run single.

St. Bonaventure 11, St. Monica 3--The Seraphs scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to tie the score, 3-3, then erupted for eight runs in the eighth inning at St. Monica.

Joey Echeveste had three hits and drove in three runs for St. Bonaventure (10-12). Echeveste led off the eighth with a walk and scored on a triple by David York. York stole home on the next pitch.

Freshman Gilbert Infante (5-2) went the distance for the fifth time, scattering five hits and striking out seven.

Campbell Hall 4, Desert Christian 2--Sophomore right-hander Michael Frost (9-3) struck out eight and notched his 10th complete game for host Campbell Hall (15-9).

Greg Kriegler had two hits and drove in a run, and Keyah Behnia had two hits and scored a run for Campbell Hall.

DIVISION VI

Highland Hall 18, Antelope Valley Christian 15--Jeff Samuels drove in four runs with three hits and struck out 11 in four innings to improve to 8-2 for host Highland Hall (11-5) in a wild-card game at Northridge Little League Field.

Travis Bell had a home run and a two-run single for Antelope Valley Christian (8-10).
