Man Kills Mother of His Children, Then Himself

In an apparent homicide-suicide, a 28-year-old man shot the mother of his two children Sunday morning before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Officials withheld the names of the man and woman pending notification of next of kin.

The woman, 22, was killed in a rented two-car garage on the 1000 block of Kewen Street, where she was living with the children, said Det. Lance Steaman of the San Fernando Police Department. The children were outside the garage during the shootings and did not witness them, Steaman said.

The man was not living in the garage at the time.

“I know that they split up a while ago,” Steaman said, adding that police did not know whether the couple were married.

A neighbor heard the gunshots and called police at 9:35 a.m., Steaman said. Los Angeles Fire Department officials pronounced both victims dead at the scene.

Steaman said the man and woman both appeared to have been shot once with a handgun found at the scene.
