Sylmar Winds Up Tied With Poly for Valley Pac-8 Title

Kassy Jimenez had 12 kills and Sylmar High earned a share of the Valley Pac-8 Conference championship by defeating Canoga Park 15-1, 15-10, 15-6, on Wednesday in a girls’ volleyball match at Canoga Park.

Stephanie Cisneros had six of her nine kills in the third game for the Spartans (12-1, 10-1 in conference play), who won their fifth consecutive match and tied Poly for the conference title.

Adriana Rodriguez had six kills and Victoria Jauregui had 15 digs for Canoga Park (2-11, 2-10).

In other volleyball matches:

Poly def. El Camino Real, 15-8, 15-8, 15-11--Gaby Gallardo had a .458 hitting percentage and Youssra Marjoua hit .562 for the Parrots (12-1) in a nonconference victory at Poly.

Gallardo had 12 kills and only one error, and added 21 assists.

Marjoua had 10 kills and one error, and contributed nine digs.

Poly is expecting to receive a high seeding at the City Section playoff meeting tonight after finishing in a first-place tie with Sylmar.

Granada Hills def. Cleveland, 15-2, 15-12, 15-10--Michelle Ferrucci had 10 of her 22 kills in the second game at Cleveland and the Highlanders (10-2, 8-1) tied Chatsworth for the Northwest Valley Conference title.

Chatsworth def. Birmingham, 15-8, 15-3, 15-8--The Chancellors (8-4, 7-1) had 37 kills in 52 attempts and a .615 hitting percentage in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Chatsworth.

Crescenta Valley def. Glendale, 15-0, 15-3, 15-4--Joanna Lange had nine consecutive service points in the second game of a Pacific League match at Crescenta Valley. The Falcons (14-3, 10-0) won the Pacific League title for the first time since 1987.

Providence def. Buckley, 15-4, 15-7, 15-8--The Pioneers clinched their second consecutive Liberty League title at Providence.

Kary Vander Borght had six aces for the Pioneers (15-2, 13-0), who haven’t had an undefeated league season since 1993.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Golden League final--Richard Butler of Lancaster keyed a 2-3-4-5-6 finish for the Eagles at Pearblossom Park in Littlerock.

Butler timed 18:40 over the 3.2-mile course to help Lancaster defeat runner-up Quartz Hill, 20-61.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Golden League final--Sophomore Shell Blevins finished first and sophomore Katie Schettig was second to help Quartz Hill to a 40-52 victory over second-place Lancaster at Pearblossom Park.

Sophomore Jennifer Yadon of Quartz Hill was fifth with 50 yards to go, but collapsed and failed to finish after battling the flu.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 14, Notre Dame 5--Joe Axlerod had 10 saves and the Wolverines (19-3, 4-0) won their 11th consecutive Mission League title at Notre Dame.

Newbury Park 10, Thousand Oaks 7--Sid Pehrson scored both of his goals in the second overtime to help the Panthers (11-12, 4-3) clinch third place in the Marmonte League and a berth in the Southern Section Division IV playoffs at Thousand Oaks.

Matt Rhodes had five goals for Newbury Park and Yoshi Kuwabara made four of his 13 saves to hold the Lancers scoreless in overtime.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westlake 11, Agoura 7--Brooke Borisoff (48-0) kept her perfect season intact but the Warriors won at North Ranch Country Club.

Nina Yaftali (41-7), playing at No. 1 singles for the Warriors (18-0, 12-0), won the last four games to defeat Allison Tyson, 6-3.
