Crescenta Valley Gets Its Fair Share With 11-8 Victory Over Glendale

Crescenta Valley scored four goals in the second quarter and won a share of the Pacific League water polo title for the seventh consecutive season with an 11-8 victory over Glendale in the league tournament final Thursday at Arcadia High.

Robert Curreri scored both of his goals in a 23-second span in the second quarter, giving the Falcons (19-5, 6-1 in league play) a 5-3 lead. Justin Payne scored two of his four goals in the quarter.

Payne held Kevin Witt, Glendale’s leading scorer, to one goal. Joao Cepeda had four goals for Glendale (18-5, 6-1).

Goalie Alex Dmitrevsky made one of his 10 saves on a penalty shot by Witt.

It is the 19th league title in water polo for Crescenta Valley. Glendale clinched a share of its first league title since 1979 by defeating Crescenta Valley in an earlier league game.

La Canada 15, South Pasadena 4--Michael McDay had five goals and Charles Chang and Dutch Turley had three each in the Rio Hondo League tournament final and the Spartans won their second consecutive league title at South Pasadena High.

Goalie Lloyd Mason had 12 saves for La Canada, ranked No. 3 in Southern Section Division III.

Rio Mesa 11, Nordhoff 9--Todd Conrad scored four of his seven goals in the fourth quarter and the Spartans (12-10) rallied to win at Malibu High and finish third in the Frontier League, clinching the league’s final playoff spot.

Danny Shepard had four goals for Nordhoff (8-15, 5-5), which had a 9-6 lead in the third quarter.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Foothill League finals--Top-seeded Jenny Munroe (36-0) of Hart defeated Dragana Ogenouska of Burroughs to win the Foothill League singles title at Cal State Northridge.

Top-seeded Penny Letts and Catherine Pucci (36-0) of Hart defeated teammates Jamie Ladd and Sara Jones, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), to win the doubles title.

Granada Hills 7, Cleveland 0--The Highlanders clinched their fourth consecutive Northwest Valley Conference title while wrapping up a third unbeaten conference season in a row.

Kelley Takeshita (13-0) of Granada Hills (13-0, 9-0) defeated Debbie Yim, 8-1, at No. 2 singles.

Katie Hartnett and Lynn Azali (12-1) beat Randi Elkins and Jenna Lee at No. 3 doubles by the same margin.

Jennifer Steinberg and Andrea Blieden (13-0) defeated Maria Babaran and Negin Mohajeri, 8-3.

San Fernando 5, Kennedy 2--The No. 2 doubles team of Karina Rojas and Valerie Mendoza scored an 8-2 Northwest Valley Conference victory at El Cariso Park for the Tigers (8-5, 4-5), who finished third in the conference.

No. 1 singles player Sabrina Warda and No. 2 Yercenia Gutierrez won in tiebreakers for Kennedy. Warda edged Gladys Preciado, 8-7 (7-4) and Gutierrez beat Juliana Cisneros, 8-7 (7-1).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Canada def. San Marino, 15-2, 15-5, 15-8--The Spartans had 13 aces to wrap up their second consecutive undefeated Rio Hondo League season at La Canada.

Kelly Gaudino had 15 kills, five aces and five digs for La Canada (13-0, 10-0).

Calabasas def. Malibu, 15-10, 15-13, 15-0--Brooke Niles had 11 kills and Catrina Nusinov added eight kills for the Coyotes, who won their second consecutive Frontier League championship and 16th sweep in a row this season at Calabasas.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Marmonte League tournament--Julie McKenna, a Newbury Park freshman, shot six-over-par 41 at Sunset Hills Country Club for a four-round total of 163 and won the individual title by 23 shots over Kelly Struyck of Thousand Oaks.

Both advance to the Southern Section individual tournament Nov. 23 at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

Thousand Oaks had a team score of 148 for a four-round total of 552 and won the title by 29 strokes over Newbury Park.

The Panthers shot 138 Thursday to break a tie with Moorpark, which shot 167 and finished third at 610.

All three schools advance to the Southern Section North regional Monday at Village Country Club in Lompoc.

Tri-Valley League tournament--Beth Allen of Nordhoff shot 20-over-par 92 at Elkins Ranch Golf Course but held on to win the individual title with a two-round total of 175.

Jennifer Marshall of La Reina shot 87 and finished second at 181.

Both advance to the Southern Section individual tournament Nov. 23 at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.
