Two people remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday, the day after they were injured in separate accidents on county roads, police said.

Martin Peck, 46, of Ojai, suffered serious head injuries Sunday after he lost control of his motorcycle on California 150 just east of Thomas Aquinas College, said Dave Cockrill, a spokesman with the California Highway Patrol office in Ventura.

The other accident closed the eastbound lanes of California 126 in Santa Paula for more than six hours.

Cockrill said 21-year-old Santiago Zavala of Bakersfield was driving in the 11 p.m. crash, which left his 17-year-old fiancee, Faviola Castillego, in a local hospital with life-threatening head injuries.

The couple were driving to visit friends in Oxnard about 11 p.m. Sunday when Zavala lost control of the compact car, Cockrill said.

The car careened through bushes in the freeway median, overturned several times and threw Castillego onto the freeway, Cockrill said.

Zavala, who was expected to be released from the hospital Monday night, will be booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, Cockrill said.

The accident closed the freeway’s eastbound lanes between Briggs and Peck roads between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. while police investigated the accident.
