Work to Start on New Golf Course Clubhouse

Woodley Lakes Golf Course is known for its smooth greens, wide-open fairways, water hazards and O. J. Simpson sightings.

But the course isn’t known for the aging mobile home that has served as the temporary clubhouse for more than 20 years.

Next fall, the course will be getting a new clubhouse.

“It’s about time,” said Lanny McCutcheon, Woodley starter. “I’m ready to move into it now.”

Construction is scheduled to begin next week on a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse that will include a restaurant, lounge, changing room, pro shop, restrooms and administrative offices.

The new $3.5-million facility will be designed by Santa Monica-based Killefer Flammang Purtill Architects.

The original clubhouse was destroyed in an airplane crash Feb. 8, 1976.

Golfer Scott Friedman, 42, is also in favor of a new clubhouse.

“It’s fantastic,” said Friedman, a Tarzana resident. “Woodley is an interesting course and a nice clubhouse will make it a really nice course.”

A concrete masonry structure, the clubhouse is being built behind the existing facility on an area that previously served as a chipping green, said Wade Killefer, principal architect in charge of design.

“That way, we can build it while leaving the existing facility there,” he said.

The design has already won a Design Excellence in Architecture Award from the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission, Killefer said.

“After seeing the drawings, I have to say it’s going to be a very nice-looking clubhouse,” said Scott Reinschmidt, Woodley starter.

As of Wednesday, trees have been removed from the site and the ground leveled.

Killefer said the raw structure--the foundation, frames, walls, floors, ceiling and roofing--should be completed in four months.
