Tour of Area for Proposed Freeway Route Delayed

A federal judge’s tour of the proposed Long Beach Freeway extension scheduled for Friday was rescheduled for Dec. 3, officials said.

U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson said earlier in the week that he wanted to visit the corridor before ruling on a request from South Pasadena for a preliminary injunction that would stop further preparations for freeway construction. But logistical problems led officials to delay the tour.

South Pasadena and preservationist groups filed a suit in August to block construction of the 6.2-mile route connecting the Foothill and San Bernardino Freeways. The suit against the U.S. Department of Transportation alleges that federal officials violated several environmental laws in approving the project earlier this year.

Opponents are seeking a court order preventing the state and federal highway agencies from acquiring any more property on the route or completing more design work before a trial can be held on the merits of the extension through Pasadena, South Pasadena and the Eastside.
