A 2 1/2-year-old girl was in critical condition Sunday after she fell seven stories from a hotel balcony, officials said.

The girl, whose name was not immediately released, wandered onto a balcony at a Doubletree Hotel while her father and stepmother were inside the room, said Louis Quezada, a spokesman for the San Jose Police Department. The balcony’s sliding glass door had been left open, he said.

The child’s stepmother was in the shower and her father was on the phone when she fell about 9:15 a.m., Quezada said. Police were trying to determine whether the girl had slipped through the railing or had climbed over it, he said.

“They’re beside themselves,” Quezada said of the parents.

The parents, who live in Temple City, were visiting the girl, who lives with her mother in San Jose, Quezada said.

Hotel rooms warn guests that balcony doors are secured by two latches, said Si Sloman, the hotel’s general manager. The hotel is reviewing its safety measures, he said.
