2 Drivers Arrested at Sobriety Checkpoints

A weekend sweep to catch drunk drivers at two locations in Oxnard and Port Hueneme resulted in arrests of two people on suspicion of driving under the influence, the Oxnard Police Department reported.

Between 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday, 726 cars passed through two checkpoints--one at Hueneme Road and Surfside Drive in Port Hueneme, the other at Ventura Road and 7th Street in Oxnard. Citations were issued to 13 other drivers for license violations, and eight cars were towed.

Accidents involving drunk drivers have been cut in half in the past few years in Oxnard because of education programs, tougher laws and sobriety checkpoints, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Bob Thomas.
