SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

An 18-month-old Orange girl remained in critical condition Monday, a day after she crawled into a roadway and a woman accidentally ran over her, police said.

The girl was with her mother, her 10-year-old brother and a 9-year-old playmate of his at the family’s home Sunday in Orange Mobile Home Park, in the 1900 block of East Meats Avenue, Orange Police Officer Ken Adams said.

The toddler was playing across the street from her frontyard, Adams said, and her “mom went inside for just a few minutes and asked the 10-year-old to keep an eye on her.”

But the girl crawled unnoticed into the road about 12:20 p.m., he said.

At the same time, Kimberlee Kirby of Placentia was driving her Mazda 626 into the park to visit a relative, Adams said.

“She saw the two other boys, but she didn’t see the girl,” he said, and Kirby struck the child.

The girl was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana with a fractured skull and a broken leg and shoulder, he said. Police did not release the girl’s name.

No charges have been filed in the accident, which remains under investigation, Adams said.

He cautioned parents and cited the accident as an example of how easily small children can scoot into trouble: “Always keep an eye on your kids.”
