Fry Steps Down as Coach of Iowa

Iowa Coach Hayden Fry, who turned a woeful football program into a three-time Rose Bowl participant, retired after after 20 seasons with the Hawkeyes.

Fry was the winningest coach in Iowa history, but his teams had trouble staying with the Big Ten powers in the 1990s after winning three conference championships from 1981 to 1990. This year’s team finished 3-8, his worst record at Iowa.

Fry, 69, also coached at SMU and North Texas State and had 232 wins in 420 games over 37 years. He had a 143-89-6 record at Iowa, which had gone 17 years without a winning season before Fry took over in 1979.

South Carolina Coach Brad Scott was fired after a 1-10 season. Scott had a 23-32-1 record in five seasons.
