Defense Dominates as No. 17 Indiana Beats No. 18 Utah

William Gladness made two tiebreaking free throws late in the game Tuesday night as 17th-ranked Indiana held on for a 52-49 victory over No. 18 in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

“I can’t imagine two teams playing harder against one another,” Indiana Coach Bob Knight said. “Neither team backed down. Neither team scored a lot. It was really a hard, tough-fought basketball game. There were no cheap points.”

The game was close all the way. Indiana’s largest lead was seven, and Utah (2-2) never led by more than two. Each team made only 35% of its shots.

“I thought both teams played great defense,” Utah Coach Rick Majerus said. “We both hang our hats on defense.”

Indiana (6-0), which will play Syracuse in tonight’s final, was led by A.J. Guyton, who scored 12 points, and Kirk Haston, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Utah’s Hanno Mottola scored 17 points and Andre Miller had 12.

No. 2 Connecticut 95, Hartford 58--Coach Jim Calhoun wasn’t there to see it, but Richard Hamilton and Kevin Freeman each scored 17 points as the Huskies (3-0) rolled over the Hawks (0-4) at Hartford, Conn.

Calhoun missed the game because of a stomach virus, and was replaced by associate head coach Dave Leitao.

No. 19 Syracuse 58, Michigan 46--Jason Hart scored 20 points and Etan Thomas scored 17 and controlled the defense as the Orangemen (4-0) defeated the Wolverines (2-3) to move into the Maui Invitational final.

No. 22 Clemson 72, Chaminade 60--Terrell McIntyre scored 15 points and Harold Jamison had 14 points and eight rebounds to help the Tigers (4-1) hold off the Silverswords (0-2) in the consolation semifinals at the Maui Invitational.

No. 25 Tennessee 85, Chattanooga 74--Tony Harris scored 18 points to help the Volunteers (3-2) walk over the Moccasins (1-2) at Knoxville, Tenn.

Kansas State 84, Arizona State 80--Cortez Groves scored six points in overtime, including the go-ahead three-point basket, as the Wildcats (4-1) rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit and beat the Sun Devils (1-3) in the consolation semifinals at the Maui Invitational.

WOMEN

Tomora Young scored 18 points and Shawnetta Stewart made three foul shots in the final 14 seconds to help No. 11 Rutgers (4-1) to a 66-59 victory over Texas (1-2) at Austin, Texas.

The Scarlet Knights played without Coach C. Vivian Stringer, who was in Raleigh, N.C., because of a family crisis.

Her son David, a football player at North Carolina State, was charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and misdemeanor assault this week after an off-campus shooting that killed a student. A North Carolina State wrestler has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting.

Sophomore center Ruth Riley had 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks to lead No. 7 Notre Dame (4-0) to a 101-92 victory over No. 25 Illinois (2-1) at South Bend, Ind. . . . Tiffany Thompson scored 21 points to lead No. 9 Old Dominion (3-0) to a 75-72 victory over No. 10 North Carolina State (2-1) at Raleigh, N.C. . . . Tonya Washington helped No. 13 Florida (5-1) to its 20th consecutive home victory by scoring a career-high 26 points in an 85-69 rout of Miami (1-2) at Gainesville, Fla. . . . Karyn Karlin scored 18 points to lead No. 14 Arkansas (5-1) to a 76-64 victory over Baylor (1-2) at Fayetteville, Ark. . . . Monick Foote scored 20 points to lead No. 17 Virginia (2-1) to a 99-57 rout of Virginia Commonwealth (0-3) at Charlottesville, Va. . . . Reserve Desiree Francis scored 27 points to help No. 21 Iowa State (3-0) to a 79-60 victory over Creighton (2-1) at Ames, Iowa.
